 Human Performance Assessment and Product Testing


 

The home fitness product market is massive.  Many products net $100 million or more and the market is only beginning to be tapped into.  The FTC and other governmental watchdog organizations are carefully scrutinizing the claims made on these products, and rightfully so.  The public can be easily deceived and the industry as a whole suffers when bogus products are put to market and customer complaints abound.  The direct response market is now being held accountable and it is necessary to scientifically test and verify the claims made on infomercials.

 

This is where Principle-Centered Health Human Performance Services (PCH) comes in. I, Mark P. Kelly, Ph.D. c, CSCS, - NSCA, ACSM, ISSN member, and Research and Development Director for the National Federation of Professional Trainers have performed many scientific studies throughout my career and as of the present have done 6 different infomercial or fitness product/training system studies.  Even though I have been an Exercise Physiologist for 20 years and have been doing scientific studies for over 16, I have done all the product testing within the past 3 years!  Thus, I am very “up to date”.

Past Studies Performed

  1. Torso T- Abdominal EMG study- several variations of tension and speed as well as comparison to another popular competitor.
  2. Choice Fitness- performed mini stress tests for machine "difficulty" calibration and EMG study and exercise regime design
  3. Body Rev- PT Metrics- Training study on metabolic rate, body composition, aerobic capacity, and anthropometrics.  Study presented at the National Annual Meeting of the National Strength and Conditioning Association- Las Vegas, July- 2005.
  4. Hip and Thigh Sculptor- Body By Jake- acute study on EMG activation of various motions, training study on body composition, anthropometrics & expert testimonial.
  5. Winjector Pro- Dosho Designs Inc.- fitness model and expert testimonial on core and dynamic training modalities.
  6. Exerstrider- by Tom Rutlin- Fitness Trekker- studied caloric expenditures, heart rates, on treadmill tests. 
  7. Malibu Pilates Chair- Guthy-Renker production. Lead scientist- on camera in national commercial.

Exercise Testing

  • Physiological tests of product efficacy and claims development- acute study
  • Physiological tests of training programs- before and after testing- chronic study
  • Determination of aspects to test for maximizing marketing claims.  For example, how many pounds of fat could be lost in a year using product x.
